Help & Safety

Everything you need to know about buying and selling on Bermly — how the site works, how to stay safe, and what our PPSR checks actually cover.

How Bermly Works

Bermly is a classifieds marketplace for dirtbikes in Australia — motocross, enduro, trail, supermoto, pitbikes and kids bikes. Sellers list their bike directly; buyers browse, message sellers in-app, and arrange the sale and handover themselves.

Bermly doesn't hold funds, ship bikes, or act as a party to the sale — every transaction happens directly between buyer and seller, the same as any other classifieds site. What Bermly does provide is a dedicated place to find dirtbikes specifically (rather than buried in general vehicle listings), in-app messaging so you don't have to share your phone number up front, optional PPSR checks on individual bikes, and a report system so problem listings and users can be actioned quickly.

Buying Safely

  • Inspect in person before paying anything. Never send money for a bike you haven't seen — in person if at all possible, or via video call at minimum if distance makes that impractical.
  • Run a PPSR check before you commit, especially on anything financed-looking or priced well under market. See the PPSR section below for what it actually tells you.
  • Check the VIN/engine number matches what's on any paperwork the seller provides, and that the bike itself matches the listing photos and description.
  • Keep the conversation in Bermly's messaging until you're ready to meet — it keeps a record of what was actually said, and means you're not handing out your phone number to every seller you talk to.
  • Pay in a way you can trace — bank transfer with a paper trail, not cash-only if you can avoid it, and never a deposit to “hold” a bike for a stranger you haven't met.
  • Something feel off? Use the report button on the listing or the seller's profile — Bermly's team reviews every report.

Selling Guide

Listings with more detail sell faster and attract fewer time-wasters. A few things that consistently help:

  • Real photos of your actual bike — several angles, in daylight, including anything worth disclosing (wear, damage, aftermarket parts). The first photo becomes your listing's cover image, so make it count.
  • Accurate hours or kilometres, not a rough guess — buyers use this to gauge condition and it's one of the first things they check.
  • Pick your suburb from the address suggestions when listing, not just typed free text — this is what lets buyers searching by distance actually find your bike.
  • Get a PPSR check done (see below) — a verified badge shows buyers you've had the registers searched and puts the results on the listing, which is often exactly what a cautious buyer is waiting for before they'll commit.
  • Write an honest description. Mention known issues up front — it filters out buyers who'd walk away at inspection anyway, and builds trust with the ones who don't.

PPSR Checks Explained

The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is the Australian government register of security interests over vehicles and other personal property. A PPSR check on a bike tells you three things:

  • Finance owing — whether there's a registered security interest, meaning a lender could potentially repossess the bike even after you've bought it, if the seller's loan isn't paid out.
  • Written-off status — whether it's been recorded as a statutory or repairable write-off by an insurer.
  • Stolen status — whether it's currently reported stolen to police.

The write-off and stolen results come from a different source to the finance one: the national vehicle register, which is built from state registration records. It often holds nothing at all on a dirtbike that has never been road-registered — so where that's the case, Bermly shows those two checks as unanswered rather than passing them off as a clean result. The finance search is unaffected, and is the part a PPSR check exists to answer.

On Bermly, a seller can order a PPSR check on their own listing for a flat $12.95. Once it comes back, the summary shows directly on the listing as a verified badge with the three outcomes above, free and without signing in. Opening the full report itself does require a free Bermly account, because the certificate can contain personal information about the parties involved.

Treat a result as a record of what the register returned on the day it was checked, not a permanent guarantee — a finance interest registered after that date wouldn't appear, and the theft and write-off data PPSR draws on can be incomplete or lag behind. It also says nothing about a bike's mechanical condition or whether the person selling it actually owns it. It rules out specific, expensive paperwork surprises as at the check date; your own inspection still does the rest.

Avoiding Scams

Common patterns worth knowing, whether you're buying or selling:

  • Priced well below market with a story attached (“urgent sale,” “moving overseas,” “can't meet in person”) — a classic setup for taking a deposit and disappearing.
  • Refusing to meet or video call, or always having a reason the bike can't be inspected before payment.
  • Asking to move off-platform immediately — a request to switch to email or another app before you've even discussed the bike is a common way to dodge a paper trail.
  • Fake courier or “safe payment” links — Bermly doesn't handle payment or shipping, and never sends buyers or sellers a payment link. Any message claiming to be from “Bermly Support” asking you to pay through a link is not from us.
  • Overpayment scams — a buyer “accidentally” sends more than the asking price and asks for the difference back. The original payment is fake or reversible; the refund you send isn't.

If you spot any of this, don't engage further — report the listing or user, and we'll take a look.

About Bermly

Bermly is Australia's dedicated marketplace for dirtbikes — built because general classifieds sites bury motocross, enduro, trail, supermoto, pitbikes and kids bikes among every other type of vehicle. Bermly keeps it to just dirtbikes, with search and filters built around how riders actually shop: category, displacement, brand, stroke type and distance from home.
